This imposing ship's mission is to treat patients who do not suffer from coronavirus, in order to relieve hospitals which, themselves, have to take care of patients infected with Covid-19.
Left from Virginia two days ago, the ship USNS Comfort arrived in New York harbor on Monday March 30. On board, 1,200 doctors, nurses and technicians for a capacity of 1,000 beds. This US Navy hospital ship also has 12 operating theaters and laboratories. This mastodon of the seas has the mission ofto receive patients requiring intensive care which are not related to coronavirus, to allow hospitals to focus on Covid-19 patients.

The mayor of the city, Bill de Blasio, welcomed the arrival of this boat. “The fact that the navy is there, that the army is there to help New York at a time when our city is in need, is very important. For the people of the city, who have gone through a lot in recent weeks, it cheers. It’s very moving for all of us, we need help, ” he said on CNN as the ship entered Manhattan harbor.

New York City is the epicenter of the epidemic in the United States with more than 33,000 cases and 776 deaths, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University. She also has to open an emergency hospital in the Javits Center conference center. Four other sites across the city have been chosen to relieve hospitals, overwhelmed in recent days by the influx of patients.
