Passengers loaded with strange big bags. In Rome (Italy), metro users can travel for free on a trip if they bring back 30 plastic bottles. “It's an excellent initiative, because it makes you understand that things have value, that they are not mere waste”, says a student who came to drop several dozen bottles. In the Italian capital, garbage management on the streets is catastrophic. Since June, garbage cans are collected on average every other day and sorting has been partly abandoned.

An unexpected success

The Romans plebiscite this initiative and even line up to drop their bottles. “We have already packed more than 750,000 bottles, about 20,000 per day, and we already have more than 16,000 kg of plastic”says Simona Tempestilli, marketing director of the Roman Transport Region. The city is now looking for funding to develop this successful initiative.
