After gloves, boots soon mandatory for two wheels?

This is news that will not please bikers. Several MPs The Republicans have tabled a Law proposition inviting “the Government to make the wearing of reinforced boots compulsory for drivers and passengers of motorized two-wheelers”. To justify their proposal, they rely on a study by Mutual Insurance for bikers, which claims that only 15% of bikers would be sensitive to the protection of the legs and feet. “However, the distribution of injuries among motorbike drivers surviving a road accident shows that in 65% of cases it is the lower limbs that are affected, compared to 50% for the upper limbs”, say MEPs in their proposal resolution.

The Bikers Mutual was quick to respond, noting that the study that the deputies rely on was made about ten years ago. Two more recent studies – carried out in 2016 and 2019 – would show much less alarming results. “In 2016, 93% of drivers responding to the survey wear boots or shoes suitable for two-wheelers,” said Mutuelle des Motards.

The French Federation of Angry Bikers is also clearly opposed to this bill. “Instead of doing prevention and education, these deputies propose to impose fines on bikers who will still be fooled stupidly because their boots do not have the right label”, said Didier Renoux, the responsible for communication from the federation, at the microphone of BFMTV.

Some constraints

If professionals in the sector seem opposed to this measure, for others it would be especially difficult to implement. This is particularly the case for motorcycle taxis which transport people who are not always equipped with the appropriate footwear. And unlike helmets and gloves, boots would pose a … size problem! “It would be complicated to have shoes in all sizes,” said Louis Penin of City Bird to BFMTV.
