Turquoise waters that are gradually turning black, a tainted lagoon and an ecological disaster that threatens. It is the result of a grounding of a Japanese cargo ship on a Mauritius reef in the Indian Ocean. It is now releasing a worrying amount of oil. The progress of the oil spill can be seen in satellite images, taken a week apart. The Mauritian authorities have requested assistance from France.
Emmanuel Macron responded to Mauritius’s call in a tweet: “When biodiversity is in danger, France is there, alongside the people of Mauritius. You can count on our support.” 21 tons of material are being transported from Reunion Island. The aim is to limit the extent of the pollution that is already plaguing the coast. “The idea is to pump what is left of the oil on board the boat”, explains a French naval commander.
