Great Place to Work: the 2020 ranking of companies

While the metro-office-dodo routine is already lacking for some in these times of forced confinement or even partial unemployment, Great Place to work has just published this Wednesday, March 25, its annual Best Workplaces list, distinguishing the companies established in France which invest the most in quality of life at work. For this 18th edition, 93 employers are included in the ranking, out of 283 participants – 33% of laureates. New this year, the institute has reviewed its different categories of business size “so that they house companies with closer realities and problems,” says Jullien Brezun, managing director of Great Place to Work France. Against the backdrop of a conviction: “it is by taking care of its employees that we take care of its customers and therefore that we achieve better economic results”.

This year again, we find groups that have become regulars in the ranking in each category (except that of less than 50 employees, who has almost only new entrants), such as Mars France, Salesforce, Leboncoin, Extia, Valhrona, Krys Group, Accuracy or Decathlon, which returns to 2th place in the over 2,500 category after a year off. “In 2020, four very strong trends are emerging among the winners, points Jullien Brezun. First that of smart working, which is pushing companies to rethink the social bond in their organization so as to align it more closely with the expectations of their employees, by developing telework, for example, especially in these times of crisis. Then, the growing interest in valuing an inspiring leadership more than a lean management purely transactional. Finally, the quest for meaning and questions of inclusion are also emerging more and more, “notes the managing director of Great Place to Work, who insists on” the necessary continuous improvement process to become and remain a 'best workplace '“.

Two-step audit

To be certified and then hope to appear on the prize list, companies must submit to a two-step audit, billed by the institute (from 4,000 euros excluding taxes for less than 50 employees and 14,400 euros HT for larger companies) , adjusted according to the number of employees and the degree of analysis desired. First step, the transmission to their employees of a questionnaire of 64 answers to which they are supposed to answer anonymously. To be valid, the survey must have obtained a minimum participation rate, which is, for example, 40% for companies with more than 5,000 employees. The labeling can be won after a certain threshold of positive responses (70% for small businesses, 66% for larger ones).

In addition, candidates complete a file on their good HR practices which is then evaluated by the thirty employees of Great Place to Work and who weighs for a third of the overall score – knowing that certification can be obtained from a score of 10/20 on this Culture Audit. A scientific integrity committee also conducts surveys on applicants to check that they are in compliance with the ethical charter (anonymity of employee responses, possible pressures, etc.). “This has led to the exclusion of at least one company during this edition,” says Jullien Brezun.

Best Workplaces in the age of coronavirus

It remains to be seen to what extent these “best workplaces” will remain this year, at a time when the uncertainty linked to the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic is shaking all sectors and businesses of all sizes. Already, some companies on the list have taken protective measures to limit breakage. The dealer group Chopard automobile, for example, had to close all of its outlets since the start of containment. While hunting for medical masks sold on its platform, Leboncoin has also put on hold some of its commercial activities (delivery by Mondial Relay, deposit of parcels at relay points). Decathlon, which had to close its stores, for its part required its 20,000 employees to put their days off and RTT, before resorting to a transition to partial activity. Frédéric Plais, boss of Platform.sh (BtoB cloud), also a 2020 winner, will no doubt encounter fewer organizational problems. He did not wait for the pandemic, to switch all his teams to telework … at 100%. An appointment is made in a year to validate the HR survival strategies of each of the winners.
