Fit out new rooms, install resuscitation equipment. In Stuttgart hospital, as in all of Germany, the goal is to double the number of intensive care beds in just a few days. A race against the clock: here there are already ten patients in intensive care because of the coronavirus, a number that has doubled in 24 hours.
“The preparations have already been going on for two weeks. We have emptied hospital services. First one, now three. We have installed a new intensive care unit”, says Professor Jan Steffen Jürgensen, medical director of the Stuttgart hospital. An entire hospital building has already been isolated. In the corridors, the staff of other services are trained in resuscitation care, and the laboratory operates 24 hours a day to perform multiple tests.
