In Italy, ill-gotten property can be easily confiscated. Thus, the Villa Nicoletti, one of the most famous mafia families in Rome, was rehabilitated into a house of jazz. “We make sure that citizens know that actions against crime can have results, crime can be defeated”, reports Luciano Linzi, director of Casa del Jazz. At the entrance to the villa, a sign was placed in memory of the 900 victims of the mafia in Italy.
Regularly, the police make public images of their confiscation operations. In Sicily, the investigators of the anti-mafia leadership have invested a house at night before seizing it. Italian law states that it is up to the family owner to prove that the property was acquired in an honest manner with legal activities. In total, 11 billion euros of goods were confiscated from the criminals.
