Mathias Malzieu proud of the adventure with Dionysos: “Because we still love each other”

Mathias Malzieu, singer of the group Dyonisos and director of the film “A siren in Paris”, guest of Franceinfo on March 5, 2020 (JEAN-CHRISTOPHE BOURDILLAT / FRANCEINFO / RADIO FRANCE)

Surprise : this is the title of Dionysos' new album and it could have been the name of the group if Mathias Malzieu had the idea before: “It’s the spirit of the group, what drives us, what drives me for 27 years. The capacity for wonder, the use of imagination to invent things that do not exist but also to have fun. We are musicians, we say that on stage 'we play' … To surprise yourself, to surprise yourself requires spontaneity. We could have been called the Surprisiers “.

In 2019, Mathias Malzieu publishes his book A little mermaid at Albin Michel's. Today comes out the film, which he wrote and directed: A mermaid in Paris with Nicolas Duchauvelle, Marilyn Lima, Rossy de Palma, Tchéky Karyo and Romane Bohringer. This is the story of a broken-hearted crooner who crosses paths with Lula, a pretty mermaid who has never known love. A story that takes place over three days but that he put “three years writing“.

I already had this idea of a broken-hearted character who ended up with what could happen to him worse or better: a mermaid who kills men or women elsewhere, people who fall in love with her with his voice.

Mathias Malzieu also talks about his illness, his transplant, the nursing staff: “I was lucky in this storm to meet extraordinary personalities. And then there are times when you had to pedal alone, it's at night, it's when there are no more visits, it's when you are afraid. And there, the imagination helped me a lot because it allowed me to remain myself, really, not just to be a patient but to be a storyteller “.

It was already in bed (after an injury) that he had started, when he was young, to play the guitar and write songs. In 1993, after playing in the street, he was joined by three high school friends (Eric Serra-Tosio, Mickael Ponton and Guillaume Garidel) and formed with them the group Dionysos. The title ladybug (1999) marks a turning point for the group because it is broadcast on radio, which opens the doors of festivals to them. Song for Jedi in 2002 became an essential title: “This is our keystone “.

Mathias Malzieu seems to follow a cycle: a novel, an album, a scene and a film but he defends himself from it.

Again, it may sound like a concept but it is not, it is taste, desire and passion.

The scene for him “it's ultra-present, that is to say that on stage, it's now, it's not at 8:30 p.m. if it's 8 p.m., it's now with all its qualities, all its faults and do with. So there is humanity that goes up and in addition, it is exchanged with a room. “

This is why I am proud of the adventure with Dionysos, because we still love each other. We don't do that because we have to. We do this because it always fascinates us. I'm always nervous to show a new song to the band and when we go on stage it's a little sacred.
