“Run”, “Defending Jacob”, “Mrs America” ​​… What are we watching as series in April?

Each month, franceinfo offers a selection of series to watch on television or on SVoD platforms.

After almost two weeks of confinement linked to the coronavirus epidemic, there is no doubt that many of you are frantically waiting for the release of new series. To help you wait and stay with us, here are some promising launches. Also note that Disney +, the long-awaited new SVoD service, will finally land on April 7 after being postponed. The opportunity to finally see legally its first original series located in the world of Star Wars, The Mandalorian. Courage to all.

“Tales From The Loop” (April 3 on Amazon Prime Video)

After having produced series drawn from films, comics or video games, here Tales From The Loop, the new Prime Video series inspired by the works of the young Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag (and already assembled in an eponymous book which also served as support for a video game). From his futuristic photos, the creator Nathaniel Halpern (screenwriter on the series Legion) imagine a city built above “The Loop”, a machine that explores the great mysteries of the universe.

It will probably be several fantastic stories, where human relationships will be at the heart of the intrigue. The atmosphere revealed in the trailer is vaguely reminiscent of a huge series, The Leftovers. Without imagining that Tales From The Loop may be up to this masterpiece, we still hope a lot from this new project of which we know little. Only certainty, we will find in the casting of these eight episodes Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Duncan Joiner (Waco) or Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes, Game Of Thrones).

Ruby and Billy are two former lovers, who made a pact fifteen years earlier. If, one day, one of the two sends to the other by text “Run” (“Course” in French), the latter will have to drop everything to join him so that they run away together.

After getting his hands dirty in the scripts for his friend Phoebe Waller-Bridge's series (Fleabag, Killing Eve), the British Vicky Jones launches in turn solo. We therefore hope a lot from this mysterious romantic comedy which brings together the brilliant Merritt Wever (unbelievable, Nurse Jackie) and Domhnall Gleeson (General Armitage Hux in the last trilogy of Star Wars).

“Mrs America” ​​(from April 16 on Canal + Séries)

“Mrs America” ​​is Phyllis Schlafly, a figure in American conservatism, particularly famous for having campaigned and prevented, in the early 1970s, the ratification of an amendment aimed at guaranteeing equality between men and women.

The series is an autopsy of feminist movements and their opponents in Nixon's America, worn by multi-Oscar-winning Australian actress Cate Blanchett. By his side, a very pretty cast of women including Rose Byrne (revealed in Damages and who plays Gloria Steinem), Margo Martindale (The Americans), Sarah Paulson (American horror story), Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) or Elizabeth Banks (30 Rock).

“Defending Jacob” (from April 24 on Apple TV +)

In a small town in Massachusetts (United States), we discover the body of a murdered young boy. Quickly, the investigation reveals that the fingerprints found on the body belong to one of his comrades, who is none other than the son of the district prosecutor. Determined to clear his child, he comes across indications that overwhelm him and thus jeopardize his impartiality.

Adapted from the eponymous bestseller by the American novelist William Landay, Defending Jacob shines, like most of the series produced by Apple, of an impeccable cast. Along with Chris “Captain America” ​​Evans and Michelle Dockery (Downton abbey), we find Cherry Jones (The Handmaid's Tale) or J.K. Simmons (Counterpart). The eight episodes of the series will be posted on a weekly basis on the Apple TV + platform from April 24.

In America in the 1990s, the story of Thomas and Dominik, twin brothers, one of whom suffers from mental disorders.

Adapted from the novel by the American author Wally Lamb, I Know This Much is True is the new project of Derek Cianfrance, screenwriter and film director Blue valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines. Designed as a mini-series in seven episodes, it is produced for HBO and carried by Mark “Hulk” Ruffalo, who embodies the two main characters, with Melissa Leo at his side (Louie), Kathryn Hahn (I Love Dick, Transparent) and comedian Rosie O'Donnell.

This April marks the return of highly anticipated series. On the one hand, the fourth part of La Casa de Papel, which will be available on Netflix starting April 3. On the other, the fifth season of Legends office, to be seen from April 6 on Canal +.

Among the other series that are back, less popular but nevertheless remarkable, we will note the return of the adaptation of the best-seller of Elena Ferrante, The prodigious friend, for a season 2 broadcast from April 2 on Canal +. The encrypted channel will also offer the third season of Killing Eve, April 12. On Netflix, you can discover the third season of Fauda, if you haven't seen it last month on Paris Première and 6Play.

Finally, do not miss the third and last season of Vida on StarzPlay. This series, which recounts the fate of two Latin American sisters who oppose everything and who are forced to face together the death of their mother, deals intelligently with gentrification, Latin minorities in the United States and female homosexuality . We are just sad that it already stops.
