“Les Miserables”, on the screens on Wednesday, reveals Ladj Ly, young filmmaker prodigy of Montfermeil (93).
Ladj Ly assumes the resumption of the title of the famous novel of Victor Hugo, without adapting it. This first feature film has inflamed some of the criticism and the public in Cannes. Jury Prize on the charts, Wretched will be released Wednesday, November 20th in theaters.
Born in Montfermeil, France, in the 93rd, Ladj Ly created the Kourtrajmé collective at the age of 17, with the support of Romain Gavras and Toumani Sangaré, to promote filmmaking. He had found his calling on seeing Hatred, on the outskirts of Paris, by Mathieu Kassovitz, Prize in staging at Cannes in 1995. He joins him on a similar subject, in his mastery of writing and the camera.
Stéphane (Damien Bonnard) has just been transferred from Cherbourg to Montfermeil where he joins the Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC). This is his first day, and to put him in the mood, his colleagues Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Gwada (Djebril Didier Zonga) make him do the “owner's tourThe case turns out badly during a confrontation between the inhabitants and the Gypsies of a circus to which a lion cub of the menagerie was stolen. The little burnt head who stole it is arrested, but seriously injured during the Chris, at the head of the brigade, is anxious to smother the burr, while the incident was filmed by a drone, which could set the city on fire.
Director of this first feature film, Ladj Ly assumes walking in the footsteps of Hatred. Kassovitz filmed the confrontation of suburban youth with the police from the point of view of the inhabitants, Ladj Ly sees it from the police point of view. This inversion makes all the difference, but does not change the report. Namely the dismissal back to back responsibilities not always assumed, with dramatic consequences, when they are not tragic.
The story of a meticulous progression, punctuated by constant and varied reminders, follows a crescendo of which each stage is a revelation. Ladj Ly opens the doors of universes – those of the police and the suburbs – with their rites, their languages, their behaviors, their glances. Ladj Ly does not claim to be an ethnologist. Observer, he dramatizes an observation fed by his own experience, having grown up in the environment he describes.
Wretched avoids suburban / police manichaeism. The reference to Hugo finds its meaning in the conditions of life where police and suburbanites are located: same non-recognition, same homes, same family problems … Playing an inventive camera, the action scenes are striking, with a constant tension of the image. The actors, professionals or not, burst the screen, with a Alexis Manenti (also co-writer) in Chris, daring cop more true than nature. With Wretcheda filmmaker is born.
