The epidemic plunges the value of OM players in the transfer window

This is one of the unexpected consequences of the current crisis. According to the Football Observatory of the International Center for the Study of Sport (CIES) of Neuchâtel, Olympique de Marseille would be one of the big losers if the football championships could not resume by the end of June. According to the CIES study, OM would be the club whose membership would lose the most value in the French, Italian, German, Spanish and English championships: the loss here amounts to 37.9 million euros .

For this calculation, CIES was based on the market value of the 20 most expensive players in each squad as of March 11, while all major championships stopped. He recalculated it in case no match is played before June 30 and if these players do not sign a new contract by then. “The magnitude of the decline varies depending on various factors such as the age of the players, the length of the contract, career trajectory and recent performance. The biggest loss in relative terms concerns older footballers with relatively short contracts and having played less this season than in the previous one ”, explains CIES in its study.

Financial fair play

We can imagine that players like Florian Thauvin, just back from injury before the stoppage of Ligue 1, or Steve Mandanda and Dimitri Payet, brilliant this season but aged respectively 35 and 33 years and whose contracts end in June 2021 and 2022, lose value with the calculation of the CIES. It wouldn’t really help OM, which will be in dire need of money in the coming months to get into the nails of financial fair play. UEFA has warned that the club, which has already been sanctioned in the past, faces a more substantial penalty in the months to come: the specter of expulsion from European competitions in particular. Among the other big losers, we can also note in France the PSG (- 31.4 million euros on the value of its workforce) and AS Monaco (- 30.1 million euros). But these two clubs do not have the same problems as OM with UEFA …
