Several serious studies by recognized scientists have made an astonishing observation: smokers are underrepresented among patients with Covid-19. Professor Dautzenberg, tobaccoologist and fervent opponent of tobacco himself puts this figure on Twitter “Smokers make 5 to 10 times less Covid than non-smokers.”
It is based on studies carried out on the Chinese and American populations. For example, in China, only 9.6% of Covid-19 patients were smokers while smokers represent 31.2% of the overall population. The researchers have not established a direct cause-and-effect relationship, but they hypothesize that nicotine may have a protective effect against Covid-19, and that is the only avenue proposed by scientists at the moment.
